
Prof. Georgios Tsakos

Prof Georgios Tsakos is Professor of Dental Public Health in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at University College London (UCL).
He is also Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of the School of Dental Medicine, University of Pennsylvania.
He also holds Honorary Consultant in Dental Public Health appointments with the Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust and with Office for Health Improvement and Disparities, Department of Health and Social Care, UK.
He graduated in Dentistry from the University of Athens, Greece, and completed an MSc and PhD in Dental Public Health at UCL. Prof Tsakos is a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health (UK).
He has served as President of the European Association of Dental Public Health (2013-15), as President of the Behavioural Epidemiological and Health Services Research group (2021-22) in the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) and also as IADR Councillor (2016-19).
He was also the Chair of the Platform for Better Oral Health in Europe (2019-2023). The UCL Dental Public Health Group is a World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre of Oral Health Inequalities and Public Health, and Tsakos contributes to the WHO work, particularly in relation to the development of oral health indicators.
He was a member of the Oral Health Working Group of the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) and is involved in World Dental Federation (FDI) programmes.
Prof Tsakos was the recipient of the prestigious Distinguished Scientist award for Behavioral, Epidemiologic and Health Services Research for 2023.
He has been a key member of the consortium for the national adult and children’s dental health surveys in the UK and has received research funding from different bodies.
He has published more than 200 papers and his research is on:
Oral health inequalities and the social determinants of health;
Subjective outcomes of oral health and quality of life;
Oral health and healthy ageing;
Associations between oral and general health.
